Virtual reality is a digital environment that can only be experienced through a computer or other electronic devices. It is used in many ways, such as for entertainment, for education, and as an art medium.
VR has been around since the 1960, but it was not until the 1990 that VR became more mainstream. A lot of companies are investing in VR because they believe it has the potential to change how users interact with technology.
The first consumer-grade virtual reality headset was released by Oculus Rift in 2016 and then followed by HTC Vive, PlayStation VR and Google Daydream View. One of the most popular applications for VR is gaming, which has attracted a lot of attention from big tech-industries such as Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo who have all released their own virtual reality headsets to compete with Oculus Rift. Virtual Reality is an alternate reality that can be experienced through the use of a headset, goggles, or other devices.
Ever since the pandemic began, companies are looking into the application of VR in their work-environment. Microsoft HoloLens is a pioneer in its industrial/medical application. Microsoft has also partnering with the US Department of Defence for the research and development of its application in the US military.
Facebook is the most notable company that is actively developing Metaverse for social media and interactive purposes. To show Facebook commitment to Metaverse and to increase its brand appeal, Facebook renamed its parent company to Meta. Meta is also investing into metaverse technology, as Meta considers it to be the next big innovation in the field of technology.
How will Metaverse, Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality help the Earth?
If we look at it from Earth's perspective, we can see that this technology will definitely help combat the ill effects of climate change. It can avoid unproductive travel that requires a lot of fuel which increase the carbon emissions into the atmosphere. By using Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality, we can reduce this phenomenon that is slowing destroying this planet.
How can you benefit from this?
If we look at it from a personal point of view; using virtual reality, we can virtually be anywhere at any given moment of time. VR technology has been used to provide work-from-home opportunities for people who want to work remotely.
This reduces the time, cost and effort that is required for in travel. And during times like these (when are entering a war and still have not fully recovered from a pandemic) this technology helps us: -
to evade government lockdowns,
decrease the spread of the virus,
reduce the impact of inflation by reducing expenses,
avoid risking travel to violence prone zones,
maintain better health by reducing job-stress,
access better quality education and health services,
increase our income by getting access to remote jobs in foreign countries,
ensure safety in this time of crisis.
When will this technology be fully functional for the public?
Currently, this technology is in its post-developmental stage. Meaning, the technology is nearly developed but not ready for an industrial scale distribution. Because, for releasing this technology to the general population, a few things has to be done, namely: -
reducing the cost of equipment that is needed for using this technology,
personalising and incorporating tools needed for each user (student, gamer, working professional, etc.),
develop a better user interface,
and finally, to develop a better internet infrastructure for its usage (5G).
The world is becoming more digital with every passing day. And the world is also becoming more open to access and open to data. The two trends have a huge impact on how we live, work and play. The global trend of digital technologies will continue to grow in the coming years, as more people and organizations around the world adopt new technology. I believe that this technology is currently needed by the public and should be encouraged to use it during these uncertain times. Decentralization and blockchain technology can solve this problem by making VR headsets cheaper, more accessible to everyone, and sustainable. The future of Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality is promising. As the possibilities are limitless, and it will take some time before we can explore them all. But it has already started to change our lives in ways we never imagined possible. VR is the next frontier, and it will be an important chapter in our history. I believe that this technology will be available to us in the coming years (2023-24).
